Why the same machine has four names
Search for this equipment and you will meet at least four names: car rotating platform, car turning platform, car revolving platform and car turntable. Occasionally it appears as a car rotator or a vehicle turning platform.
They describe one machine. A circular platform carries a vehicle and rotates it about a vertical axis so it can face a new direction — commonly 180° so the car can drive out forwards, or a full 360° for display. Nothing about the mechanism changes between the names; the vocabulary shifted with the application. Buyers writing technical specifications tend to say rotating platform, while dealerships, showrooms and villa owners say turntable.
That matters for two practical reasons. First, when you compare quotations, you need to know whether suppliers are pricing the same class of machine. Second, when you search for guidance, the useful content may be filed under a different name than the one you used. This page is the terminology bridge: it defines each name, then routes you to the detailed guide for your situation.
The names, defined
| Term | Where you meet it | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Car rotating platform | Tenders, engineering specifications | The generic technical name for the machine |
| Car turning platform | Construction, driveway and access planning | Emphasis on turning the car around on the spot |
| Car revolving platform | Sales and marketing material | Same machine, named for the revolving motion |
| Car turntable | Dealerships, showrooms, residential | The trade name most buyers search for |
| Car rotator | Research, testing and event facilities | Positions or presents a vehicle precisely |
| Display turntable | Exhibitions, retail | A lighter machine for models and products, not cars |
The one genuine distinction in the list is the last row. A display turntable is a light-duty machine: it rotates a showroom model, a product or an exhibition stand, with a load measured in tens or low hundreds of kilograms. A car rotating platform is vehicle-rated. If a quotation does not state the load rating and the diameter, you cannot tell which of the two you are being offered.
What the machine actually is
Underneath the vocabulary, the engineering is consistent. A steel platform — usually diamond plate or a finished surface to match your floor — sits on a ring of support wheels or a slew bearing, driven by an electric motor through a gearbox. Rotation speed is controlled by a variable-frequency drive, which is why a vehicle unit can move slowly and smoothly enough to be safe, and a showroom unit can be tuned for presentation.
Our own range covers 3 m to 6 m diameter platforms rated 2 to 5 tons, with rotation speed set between 0.2 and 2 rpm. Mounting is the other variable: a pit-mounted unit sits flush with the finished floor so cars drive straight on, while a surface-mounted unit bolts to the slab with a short ramp. You can see the full specification, options and construction detail on the car turntable product page.
Which page to read for what
Because the machine is one product and the questions are many, the practical guidance lives across several pages. Use this table to go straight to the right one — there is no need to read them all:
| Your question | Go to |
|---|---|
| Which model, diameter and capacity should I buy? | Car turntable buying guide |
| How is it installed, and do I need a pit? | Pit-mounted vs surface-mounted lifts |
| How do I keep it running and service it? | Car turntable maintenance |
| I need it for a showroom or dealership | Car turntables for showrooms |
| It is for a private villa or luxury home | Car turntables for luxury homes |
| It is for a parking structure or tight site | Turntables and parking facility circulation |
| The car is driven straight off the platform | Drive-away car turntable |
| I want to see a finished installation | Dubai villa turntable · Shanghai auto showroom · Brazilian dealership |
The product page is the hub for specifications; the guides cover selection and operation by application.
Using the right term in your documents
If you are writing a specification, a tender or a purchase order, the wording changes what suppliers quote and how easily the document can be reviewed later:
- State the function, not only the name. “Car rotating platform, 180° turning” is unambiguous. A bare product name is not, because the same words cover display turntables.
- Give the load rating. Capacity per platform, in tons or kilograms. For a vehicle unit this is the single most important number after diameter.
- Give the diameter. Vehicle platforms are commonly 3 m to 6 m; a platform smaller than the car length will not rotate it cleanly.
- State the mounting. Pit-mounted or surface-mounted, decided by whether excavation is possible and whether the floor line must stay flush.
- State the environment. Indoor showroom, outdoor driveway, or a research facility that needs precise positioning — each affects the finish, drainage and controls.
Getting those five items into the enquiry usually saves a round of questions, and it makes two quotations genuinely comparable. If any of them is still open, the buying guide works through them in order.
Car rotating platform vs rotating display platform
The two names are close enough that quotations regularly mix them up, but they are built to different load assumptions:
| Car rotating platform | Rotating display platform | |
|---|---|---|
| Payload | 2-5 t vehicle | Model, product or exhibition stand |
| Diameter | 3-6 m, sized to the vehicle | Usually 1-3 m |
| Drive | Vehicle-rated ring and drive unit | Light-duty gear or belt drive |
| Surface finish | Non-slip, drainage-ready | Presentation finish |
| Rotation speed | Slow, manoeuvring speed | Set for viewing |
| Mounting | Pit or surface, often outdoor | Almost always indoor, floor-mounted |
If the platform has to carry a car, it is a car rotating platform whatever the quotation calls it. If it only has to present one, a display turntable is lighter and cheaper - the showroom guide covers that case.
Where to use each term
Different documents reward different wording. Using the wrong one makes a specification harder to compare side by side:
| Document | Preferred wording | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tender or specification | “Car rotating platform, 180° turning, 3 t, 5 m diameter, pit-mounted” | Function plus the four numbers suppliers must quote against |
| Purchase order | “Car turntable” | Shortest form that still maps to a catalogue line |
| Showroom or exhibition brief | “Rotating display platform” or “display turntable” | Signals a presentation unit, not a vehicle load |
| Research or testing facility | “Car rotator” | Matches the positioning use case rather than parking |
FAQ
Is a car rotating platform the same thing as a car turntable?
Yes. Car rotating platform, car turning platform, car revolving platform and car turntable all describe the same equipment: a circular platform that rotates a vehicle about a vertical axis so it can face a new direction, usually 180 or 360 degrees.
What is the difference between a car rotating platform and a display turntable?
A vehicle rotating platform is built to carry a car, typically 2 to 5 tons in 3 to 6 m diameters. A display turntable is a lighter machine for showroom models, products or exhibition stands, where the load is far lower and the rotation speed is set for viewing rather than manoeuvring.
What does a car turning platform do in a driveway?
It rotates the car in place so it can leave forwards instead of reversing onto a road. That is the main reason narrow villa driveways and hillside properties specify one: no reversing manoeuvre, and no turning circle to build.
How much load can a car revolving platform carry?
Vehicle-rated revolving platforms commonly handle 2 to 5 tons, which covers sedans, SUVs and light commercial vehicles. State the heaviest vehicle you will rotate, including any load, when you request a quotation.
Where does the term car rotator come from?
Car rotator is used in engineering and hospitality projects — research facilities, testing bays and event venues — where vehicles have to be presented or repositioned precisely. It describes the same rotating platform principle, named for the movement rather than the parking function.
Is a car rotating platform the same as a car turning platform?
Yes. “Car turning platform” is simply the verb form of the same product. Suppliers use “rotating” and “turning” interchangeably, so the term itself rarely changes what gets quoted - state the function, the diameter and the load, and the wording stops mattering.
